How to Import from Turkey to Ireland: Process, Time and Costs

Why the Turkey–Ireland Lane Is Different

There is no direct land border between Turkey and Ireland, and post-Brexit Ireland sits behind an "indirect access" route from the UK. Today the TR–IE corridor runs on two main routings. The first is Turkey → Eastern Europe → UK → Ireland (RoRo or Channel Tunnel). The second — preferred since Brexit instead of the "UK land bridge" — is direct sea routes from Belgian or Dutch ports straight to Irish ports.

Standard Transit Time

| Mode | Estimated Time | |---|---| | FTL (Full Truckload) | 8–12 days | | LTL (Groupage) | 10–14 days | | Express FTL | 6–8 days (premium) |

Variables: loading point's distance from Istanbul, Kapıkule/Kapitan Andreevo border traffic, Dover/Calais ferry schedules, Dublin/Rosslare entry congestion and any customs examination.

Document Set

The minimum document set for a Turkey-to-Ireland shipment:

  1. Commercial Invoice — with Irish importer and consignee details
  2. Packing List — pallet and carton breakdown
  3. A.TR Movement Certificate — for industrial goods (zero duty)
  4. CMR Waybill — issued by the carrier
  5. EUR.1 — for agricultural goods and items outside A.TR scope
  6. Certificate of Origin — for certain products
  7. EORI Number — for both the Turkish exporter and Irish importer

Cost Components

A typical landed-cost breakdown:

  • Road freight (origin loading to Irish consignee)
  • Turkish export declaration
  • T1 transit declaration and guarantee
  • Irish AIS import declaration
  • Customs duty (if any) and 23% VAT
  • Ferry cost (built into freight on direct-sea routings)

For Turkish-origin industrial goods accompanied by a validated A.TR, customs duty is 0%; only the 23% Irish VAT applies, and most importers can reclaim it.

Common Pitfalls

  • A.TR leaving Turkey without the customs endorsement stamp → duty becomes payable in Ireland
  • Irish consignee without an EORI → cargo held in Dublin
  • Missing Irish VAT number on the invoice → declaration rejected
  • Incorrect HS/CN code → duty recalculated, shipment delayed
